Domain Whois: registration expiry lookup

>

An expired domain means a lost website and email. Enter a domain to see when its registration ends, who the registrar is and what status it is in.

What the domain Whois lookup shows

The lookup queries RDAP, the modern replacement for the old Whois protocol, and shows the domain's registration date, expiry date, date of the last change, days left until expiry, the registrar and the domain's status codes.

The expiry date is the one to watch. When a domain expires, the website and email stop working, and after the grace and redemption periods anyone can register it. Owner contact details are usually hidden by registrars for privacy and are not shown here.

How to read domain statuses

  • clientTransferProhibited: a normal lock against unauthorised transfers that most registrars set by default.
  • clientHold or serverHold: the domain is suspended and does not resolve. Contact the registrar.
  • redemptionPeriod: the domain has expired and been taken out of use; it can usually still be restored for an extra fee.
  • pendingDelete: the domain is about to be released and can no longer be renewed.
  • No information found: the domain may be free, or its registry (some country domains) does not publish RDAP data.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't the lookup show the owner's name and email?
Since GDPR most registrars redact owner contact details in public records. To reach the owner, use the contact form or email relay that the registrar provides.
I have auto-renew on, but expiry is close. Should I worry?
Check that the card or balance at your registrar is still valid. Auto-renew fails silently more often than people expect, and the full check takes off a point when fewer than 30 days are left.
Which domains are supported?
Every domain whose registry publishes RDAP, which covers .com, .net, .org and most newer extensions. Some country domains still run only the old Whois and return no data here.
